Cleaning up old tiled floor

Ok, thought I'd throw this one up to the PH collective...

Our place is a Victorian terrace with a tiled floor in the hallway but it's a right mess. Some paint to remove but mostly needs a damn good clean, anyone got any good reccomendations? (The tiles are the stone, porous type, not modern ceramics).

Have found these products which sound good but seem expensive, anyone got any experience?
