DIY Help! My slate tiles smell of poo!

So due to a small leak in our kitchen, we had the whole floor replaced under our insurance policy. Naturally we made the most of the budget and laid a natural slate tile sourced from B&Q. The job was finished last Friday and whilst it looks great I cant get rid of a HORRIFIC smell coming from the tiles.. .it smells like raw sewage and permeates to the rest of the house? I have tried a clean, and sealant (yesterday) but no apparent change to the smell yet. Any ideas folks !? Any builders in the house ?!

who laid the tiles and did you piss them off before they'd finished??

did you dry out the floor that you laid the tiles on first? if it was floorboard s or other flooring? did you take the boards up and dry that area? i am hoping it was a solid floor...

Could it be the fixative/adhesive/grout etc curing?

Are you sure you bought slate tiles and not petrified human waste? It's an easy mistake to make in B&Q, the ailses are right next to each other.

my thoughts exactly but the grout def does not smell, the tiles do. could it be the adhesive under the tile "going off" ? still ?

PS its a solid concrete floor and we had a dehumidifier in there for 4 weeks in order to gain a great looking certificate.

When you first bought the tiles you must have noticed if they smelt or not...

...therefore eliminating the tile and pointing the smelly finger of suspicion straight at your fitter and the surprise pasty he left under the floor.

well ive laid a few tiles in the past... just a few... and ive also smelt rotten fish, and ive cetainly smelt a lot of poo. I can whole heartedly say this is the smell of poo.

good point steamer, you must be some sort of professional. the tiles in the box did NOT smell of poo.

your tiler was desperate for a dump, but running behind, so he crimped off a length on your kitchen floor, then tiled over it.

First question have you smelt a slate from the same batch that hasn't been laid (assuming you have a few spares ?)and is it a solid or suspended floor ?


We use slate floors a lot and can't say I have ever noticed this before ,small list of maybes are

Flooring was not allowed to dry out properly and it is the waste water still trapped in it

The tile adhesive has reacted to the floor

If the leak was waste water/sewage then you'd have smelt it before the new floor was laid. Similarly on the 'pikey fitter crapping under it' theme I don't see how molecules of poo smell can get through solid slate, or even grout in that time.
