What did I nearly run over?

Hey y'all,
driving home from work tonight at 10:15-10:30, I had to brake hard to avoid hitting an animal.
Nothing remarkable in this, apart from the fact that I've no idea what it was.
It was a four-legged mammal with grey/brown fur (like a grey squirrel's), about two feet long and eighteen inches high. Small to medium dog-sized, really, which is what I thought it was initially. It didn't have much of a tail and a head like a deer's.
Was it some sort of deer?

So lets get this straight.
You had a possible encounter with a rare, possibly undiscovered creature. A creature cryptozoologists would bum their mothers (like Dave S13) to discover.
You had the opportunity to run the beast over, photograph it, cut a reasonable fillet steak out of it and post a 'what sauce should I cook this little tasty little fecker in?' on the cooking area of the forum.
And yet you didn't.
You don't belong here. Chum.
