New fuel shortage?

Is this going to start another panic buying moment from the British public when the news/papers start scare mongering?

No word on any impact on refinery utilisation, so as far as I can see its only maintenance staff that have gone on strike, so it shouldn't/ won't have any affect on production or supply. Unless anyone knows any different?
Its common practice for oil, gas & energy companies to put major contracts out for tender and use a single contractor for construction & commisioning, its gone on for years (I can think of several different foreign engineering companies that have built units on the site I work on years back).
Besides, these Italian workers are willing to go to another country to work. If the local workers are skilled, why don't they get off there arses and go to Kazakstan/ Nigeria/ UAE etc to work?

Having heard some of the Union folks on the radio this morning, there's a worrying current of xenophobia bubbling away just under the surface. The contract went out to tender and was won by an EU firm with the required expertise. If the local workforce lacks the skills, what's the alternative? Would the protesters decline offers of foreign work on the grounds they were denying the local workforce the opportunity? Of course they wouldn't, they'd be off like a shot, doubtless on a US built plane. Still, it's all about "British jobs for British workers" isn't it. Wonder how many of them found out about the protest on their UK manufactured televisions, computers and mobile phones?
You can bet that should these protests increase the price of fuel, the same people will be moaning about "greedy oil companies", as they fill up their French, German or Japanese car and pay a Sri Lankan forecourt assistant...

We should use panic fuel buying as a means of culling the stupid.
They should have people like me manning the tills at petrol stations in times of potential panic buying.

This is the problem with downturns........competition for resources hots up and guess who gets the blame.....those dirty evil, skilled foreigners 
I suspect that we will begin to see more of this thinly veiled xenophobia if things continue to deteriorate.....
