Stayed at both, neither were great hotels but both reasonably priced, functional and pleasant 3* type places in good locations.
Great city for long weekend - watch the taxi drivers though, the thieving b

ds will try every con in the book.Further to Seight’s comments I would encourage staying in Taksim due to most of the nightlife and shopping being in the area. I stayed in the old town thinking it would be the better base but once you’ve done the local mosques and palaces and Grand Bazaar there is not much else to do there aside from being ripped off everywhere you turn.
A cab from the old town to Taksim should cost in the region of 6 pounds or so but as mentioned the cab drivers will take the long way or mess around with the meter to rip you and claim innocence. Having said that, the Crowne Plaza in Laleli is a pretty good hotel and using their branded taxis is fine.

In the New Town, yes very much so. The Istiklal Caddesi, the street main street that runs South from Taksim Square is packed solid with people on friday and saturday nights and the side streets thereoff have plenty of lively bars and restaurants. Really good fun.
In the old town, no, not really. A smattering of tourist places so you won't struggle to find somewhere to have a meal or a beer, but it's hardly kicking.
