Toll charges and company expenses

Our accounts departments are, once again, trying to prove their worth by being aquward with expenses. This month I have a couple of toll charges, one for the Itchen bridge in Southampton, and one for the Severn Bridge. Had it only been the former I wouldn't have bothered claiming, but as the Severn bridge cost an entirely unreasonable £5.40 I thought I would. Now they don't want to pay it because I don't have a receipt.

I'm not too fussed about the £5, but does anyone know if it is actually possible to get a receipt at these tolls?

Well the little Toll bridge i go over everyday for 30p, will provide a reciept, So i would hope when paying over a fiver they could be as civil

I believe if you go to the manned booths you can ask for a receipt.

the dartford crossing does not issue receipts even if you ask for them

M6 toll gives receipts regardless of a man'd booth... you just press a button prior to putting your card in...

Ive never had to submit a receipt for a bridge toll, but I've never paid a bridge toll that was more than £1.

Is it a bridge you cross often? It may be worthing enquiring if you can buy a book of tickets.


Back in the days when the Forth Road Bridge was 40p a work colleague used to claim the expenses and go the 'long way round' by other roads.

Not sure if true but under EU law you can claim upto £25 and dont have to have a receipt
Cant remeber who told me but I remeber thinking if he said it it is probalby correct.

next time take another route if possible and stick a ferk off milage claim in

Humber Bridge will give a rcciept on request, but our firm uses it so much that we buy books of tickets in advance.

Glad you mentioned that actually, I hadn't realised that they've put it up.

If you're going to be using the Severn Bridge frequently, you could have a transponder put in your car (same as the DartTag, but they're stupidly not compatible) and get your company to fund the account. I don't think you get any discount for it though.

Thanks for the replies, I was hoping everyone was going to say that you don't get receipts from toll bridge. Nevermind, next time I'll just have to avoid the change buckets in order to get a receipt.

The Sevrn bridge recipts were hand written when i used it last year.

£5.40 a go and they have to hand write the receipts. hahah

company tried to get me to get receipts find a cheaper route, like the other way around the m25 which would use a lot more fuel than £1.50

Last year? I've been getting printed receipts for the last 8 years. Are you using a small crossing further up the river serviced by a troll?

Yes you can use a Tag, but they are pretty backward in that you have to send a cheque to credit the account. A complete pain.
