Just wondering if anybody else has had trackers thrust upon them at work? Basically We've been told to 'track' every aspect of our job on a spreadsheet so management can work out costs when taking on extra customers (If you believe that...). Working in an IT problem solving role the idea that you can work out how much time a certain task will take is impossible (I'm currently working out as 130% productivity!). Now I presume this 'tracker' management style is spreading as one of my Dilbert calendars mentioned it last year and the BBC is doing one to monitor job losses. Anyone else using one or know the origin of this IMHO worthless data logging system.

Not for me. However this has been going on for years.

In certain roles it is excellent for pricing up jobs, also good at seeing who is cr@p at their job.

yep, did loads when i worked at the bbc, and I lost count when i worked at honeywell.

There will be redundancies, restructures, and pompous management consultants (who are still in their teens) telling you how the department should be run according to standard industry comparisons.

just re-submit the same made up time sheet every quarter and they will come to their own conclusions recommending significant savings in your department.

(not wanting to sound too negative!!!!)

should also say, it can be a good way of costing your time to customers, but if you haven't been doing it up to now, how have they costed your time to clients before if that is the official reason?

I work in a 'non value added' department (finance) so the writing is on the wall when they churn these initiatives out
