From their position statement;

"Research shows that completely removing the current exclusion on blood
donation from men who have sex with men would result in a fivefold increase
in the risk of HIV-infected blood entering the blood supply. While changing
deferral to one year from the last sexual contact would have a lesser effect, it
would still increase this risk by 60%."

So it sounds pretty reasonable to me.

A gay ban is a harsh way of putting it though, i'll bet there is a no high risk policy, so people who use lots of blood products, sex industry workers etc are all excluded too.

In Australia, (and I think NZ and USA) it's illegal to give blood if you spent more than 6 months living in Britain between 1980 and 1996.
