"The aggressive pursuit of personal success by adults is now the greatest threat to British children, a major independent report on childhood says.

It calls for a sea-change in social attitudes and policies to counter the damage done to children by society.

Family break-up, unprincipled advertising, too much competition in education and income inequality are mentioned as big contributing factors.

"Children with separate, single or step parents are 50% more likely to fail at school, have low esteem, be unpopular with other children and have behavioural difficulties, anxiety or depression," it argues.

"Child-rearing is one of the most challenging tasks in life and ideally it requires two people," the report concludes.

It also suggests that having many more working mothers has contributed to the damage done to children.

"Most women now work and their new economic independence contributes to levels of family break-up which are higher in the UK than in any other Western European country."

The panel has a series of recommendations aimed at improving the quality of family life experienced by children:

• a civil birth ceremony conducted by a registrar in which parents publicly accept the responsibilities of parenthood

• free parenting classes available around the time of birth

• free psychological and family support if relationships struggle

• rules making it easier for parents to stay at home to rear their children

So time for married mothers to leave the workplace and for society to shun single mothers?

just another reason I would like to be able to roll the clock back 30yrs and try again without multi culturism, sexual 'equality' and going back to the premise of children should be seen and not heard.

Grumble grumble

Sounds good in priniciple

I'm all for the 'family' values way of living. Many now shun marriage, but I do think it has an element of adding stability to a family, okay it's only a piece of paper, but it's a commitment nonetheless.

I'm also in favour of single mothers not being given homes for them and their children, 99% of families would support them, those that aren't should live in group accomodation. If they're decent mothers, they WILL get out of that environment.

They can shove that up their arses. Having a child is an entirely private affair and there's no way on earth I would submit to a public guilt ceremony.

If it's an entirely private affair parents wouldn't expect the state to help bare the costs of bringing up the child.

Nice little lesson in Labour party thinking this. Conservatives have been saying that sort of thing for years while Labour have undermined families, told women they should go out to work and so on. Ruin society first, then spend no doubt hundreds of thousands of pounds on advisers, consultants and so on, to tell them something that's fairly obvious to most people anyway, then try to spin it that capitalism and the pursuit of success are to blame.

It's in the state's interest to encourage people to have kids. If we don't who's going to pay for everything when you retire?

£20 pw is hardly breaking the bank anyway. Oh, and the one-off £150 CTF. I don't think I get anything else from the state (the CTF isn't mine anyway).

Kids only started killing each other since adults stopped disciplining them..
