Am I the only one to think that this is can only end with a Large smoking hole in some (unfriendly) country's backyard, a bunch of sheepish looking engineers and yet another load of international sniggering at UK space programs.
At least its not an American project.......that way the smoking crater won't be in our backyard

Ummm, its pretty much a tried and tested system.
Do a search on google for 'spaceshipone' or the newer version 'spaceshiptwo'
It's also the way Richard Branson is going to send people into space. It gets stuff nice and high without bothering with the initial rocket boosters - it's a re-usable first stage that's also a plane, basically.

This is basically a HUGE missile being launched by a civilians...I can hear the last words from the controllers before WW3

Basically it's an old stripped out Tristar airliner that flies up to 50,000', drops the pegasus rocket, which then zooms off into space to drop off the satellite.

Up until the 1970s we weren't doing too bad, in 1970 a "Black Arrow" made Britain the sixth country to launch its own satellite.
