When it snowed in January we headed up the fells with an upside down clio bonnet with a child booster seat screwed onto it as a sledge. Not sure the HSE would recommend it...

Quite a steep hill - used to be a grass ski slope.

"Francesca Anobile: High-flying student"

Tragic. I wonder if there was less H&S intervention in this country now, children would have a little more common sense. By contrast to this, children aren't being allowed out in playgrounds when it snows.

We did some pretty foolish things when we were younger but I can't help thinking we would have jumped off the car roof before it reached 50 mph.

Heard this on the radio. All they said was a girl died when the sledge hit a barb wire fence. I had mental images of the results of passing someone through a giant egg slicer.

Pah. In my day, we'd be standing up trying to kickflip the bonnet over the fence.

Having had to have gravel picked out of my back following an heroic attempt to skateboard down a massive slide in the 70s, I doubt it TBH. You just think you're indestructible at that age - I blame Captain Scarlet personally.

Sadly this is true.

I am sorry the girl lost her life....

..but this can only lead to more intervention by H&S. What the hell has happened to common sense!!!

Surely, if you're going sledging you look at the bottom of the slope you're planning to go down?

In my day we'd sledge down a bank which must have been all of 200m long and a stupidly steep gradient with a rocky stream halfway down it. About 75% of the time you'd have enough speed to hit the narrow point and make it over the other side. The rest of the time you bailed out or got soaking wet and bruised.
