My iPhone went a swimming

Just got my first iPhone 3G 8Gb yesterday.
Disaster only 3 hours after registering when It slipped out of my shirt pocket into the bath!
I grabbed it out immediately and after shaking it and removing the SIM card Googled for a solution!
I wrapped it in a towel and put it on the radiator, overnight in the airing cupboard.
Today I've returned the SIM card and plugged it into mains.
The display looks fine with no mottling behind the screen.
It received a call but the touch screen is not working so couldn't answer it. I can't slide the unlock tab across so whilst it may not be as damaged as it could have been, it is still unusable.

Any suggestions as to what it may be that's causing the touch screen prob and whether it is a hardware or software problem?

I hope you took out insurance. If not delete your post and take out insurance

If it still has water in maybe this will affect it. If you take it to an apple store they will be able to see if has water damage. Your best bet is O2 insurance.

Back to o2 (presumably) fingers crossed, "Oi this iPhone isn't working", then try to avoid bad karma for a few months might work !

I had some issues with my I phone after it got very wet at a very drunken foam party.

Calls were coming though and i could answer them but couldn't hear anything when people spoke and they couldn't hear me

Phoned apple and they were able to talk me though wiping the phone and re installing everything using I-tunes, It might be a long shot but worth a try.

If not I think you can book it into various apple stores to be looked at and claim on either home or phone insurance if you need to.

OH did the same thing to her iphone, although hers went down the toilet. Best place for it in my opinion.

However, if you really want to sort it out then there are several sites/youtube vids on how to disguise the water damage by covering something up with a bit of card. Surely if you have only used it for a few hours just take it back to the shop and tell them it worked ok for a while then failed.

Go to wherever you bought it and they will 'attempt' to fix it. More likely they will give you a new handset, but you will need to wait 14 days.

I went with a friend to return his iPod to the Apple Store hoping for a (paid) repair.

It was broken due to being dropped in the bath and the warranty was due to expire in three days time.

The Apple genius listened to his story, said he was impressed to be told the truth and replaced it for a re-conditioned model there and then.

We were amazed!

Try plugging something in the headphone jack then taking it out and see if you can hear people then. That happened on mine once but only once??

As previously mentioned check your contents insurance. I checked with mine and saved £150 on insurance. Well sort of. Obviously I wouldnt have bought the insurance but you get the drift

i think with the iPhone you get 3 months free insurance (AFAIK its the same for most NEW contracts) so you maybe able to claim on that...

dont get rid of the phone so its obvious you havnt just sold it on etc.

As mentioned, most phones these days have indicators inside to detect if it's been dunked in water so if you try to return it as faulty they will probably spot this.

I'd first check how much a repair would cost from Apple. If you want a new one and have contents insurance, then this is probably your best bet.
