Hello all. I'm getting married this year and the other half has told me to "sort the cake out, as I've got a billion other things to do and you're not doing anything!" which I thought was a little harsh but cos I love her and seeing as I will be taking part in the ceremonies I thought I would do so. If it was up to me, I'd get a chocoloate fudge cake from tesco's and serve that up. I wanted to ask, can anyone recommend anything different. We're both not keen on the standard 3 tier white cakes of differing sizes. I like the cup cake style cakes but want to know if anyone knew or had seen anything different.

M&S. You don't even need to order it until a week before hand, so you can sit back with your feet up for a few months before worrying. It'll cost a fraction of a price of the cake bought elsewhere, and if you're serving at the reception then half the guests will be too pissed to tell any difference in cake anyway. As a bonus, they're actually meant to be decent tasting cakes too.

We used www.hockleyscakes.co.uk in Northampton. They were really good and will make anything! When we went there to discuss our cake with them they were just finishing a wedding cake for some sci-fi fans. The cake was based on the Alien vs Predator film and consisted on several tiers with some hand made Predators on the top with a load of the Alien characters clambering up the other tiers towards them. We ended with three suitcases on top of one another with hand made models of us on top, had to supply details and photos of us and our outfits etc so they could get them right. Cake tasted good too, I think drunk

Whatever you do don't skimp on this. This was my job to do for our wedding a few years back. There was no way the only thing I was left in charge of looked cheap and st. I spent a fortune on ours. Found a local chocolatier/cake shop who made a 3 tier effort exactly how I wanted it. Bottom layer was fruit based, second layer sponge with marzipan vomit and the third was 100% sponge. That was my bit. Everyone loved it and I kept my testicles.biggrin

I had the job sorting the cake too. So I designed my own! we had a three tier pyramid and a cutting cake. Two layers were vanilla sponge and two where chocolate. It was covered in soft icing that was like melted marsh mellows (looks like snow) and was held up with a hidden glass frame with flowers in the gaps. It turned out pretty good!

Any chance of convincing her that you don't really need one?

Hardly anyone eats it anyway, and it's several hundred pounds that would be better spent on something else (imho).

Am also getting married this year and we have spent a fair amount of time deliberating the cake issue (amongst other things!). We were dead set on cup cakes to start with but now it seems that they're this year's "must have", i.e every "Chardonnay and Wayne" in the world will be having them, so we baled on that. ChoccyWoccy as mentioned above are certainly different; have been to a wedding where they had one of theirs, and also recently to a wedding having the cheese option - sounds odd, looks odd, but makes perfect sense when placed on a table with biscuits and port!

This site http://www.cake-cake-cake.co.uk/ has some great designs but we found the woman slightly slow on the communication and helpfulness front, so finally having come up with a hybrid design of our own, a family member has offered to make it for us.

Its a great fun thing. We've chosen ouirs ready for August. Bottom layer is fruitcake (this keeps the oldies happy, who want this as tradition- and due to weight the bottom layer must be fruitcake). Next layer is cholocate orange. Final layer is carrot cake.

The detailing can take all day to decide- you can literally have whatever you want, although I'm not allowed to have a small marzipan Aston on the cake!

Agree.
Most 'wedding' cakes are simply a couple or three £15 cakes plonked on top of each other and then a zero added to the end because of the use of the W word. Utter madness.

My fiance and I are looking at our own design, making it more fun than normal.

They made a Helter Skelter 3 tier cake for us - We had a golfer, a horse and a horse rider coming down the helter skelter. It was quite a few years ago, but it was and they were fantastic...Not sure about your location, but may be worth the trip....

my mum makes them. can make anything you like and as its a hobby doesn't charge the earth. she has nvq's in it even, and can make sugar flowers so realistic she has some in a vase that you wouldn't know were fake from a few feet away.

still, no matter how many times i ask, she never brings me a cake on her visits frown

We got 1.5x the guest numbers of 'Magic Cakes' from Konditor and Cook and then got them to make us a 9" round cake to cut for the photos (which I scoffed)

We chose the colour schemes and decor patterns.

I just did a search and they now offer just that as a package - I must have been a trend-setter smile
