The past 2 years my mum has failed to buy my fiance of 3 years a birthday card. My mum has never never been great at buying cards, as birthdays are not a big thing in our family, though granted we do exchange cards most of the time.

My OH's family will literally hunt you down and rip your heart out if you dont get them a card on their oh-so important birthdays

Now she is going on at me night and day about how my mum hates her (which I know for a fact she doesnt, she loves her). its causing massive problems because of a fking birthday card. Nothing I can say or do makes any difference and now she is saying that she wont be going to any family events in future etc etc and I can see this having a serious affect on our relationship - I just think she is being ridiculously paranoid (which I believe she has always had)

Why not remind your mum to buy her a card?

Your mother is either completely inconsiderate, or unaware of what a big issue it is (ie: you haven't told her). Or, your bird is looking to make a mountain out of a molehill and use it to support another argument.

Is your bird the type who will go mental if the cushions on the sofa aren't "just so"?

My ex once copped a strop because one of my aunties bought my brother's OH a card and didn't get her one on her Birthday a couple of months later.

I quickly resolved the situation by saying something along the lines of...

"who gives a st!?!?"

...puts things quickly into perspective!!

Bloody hell is your OH from the same family as my wife??

Granted my wife has escaped their stupidity and isnt bothered about the card, just as long as they call / text her on the day to acknowledge its her birthday, BUT her entire family take it so seriously - they will call up and say things like "Im really hurt, I didnt think we had fallen out, whats the problem?" just cos you forgot to send a wky peice of cardboard?

Attention wes the lot of them - secretly IMO they love it when you forget as they then demand much grovelling to get back in the good books...

Last time we told them to grow up and get a life, havent spoke much since (which is really really really great as they are mostly selfish attention seeking no hopers, and the few who are decent we get on with very well so really no loss)

Tell her to wise up and stop being so ignorant - not all families follow the same wky traditions.

As a woman cards to me are very important. I'm not bothered about presents but i do love a nice card. Its not the card its self, its the fact that someone has gone out of there way and thought of me. I would hurt if my MIL didn't get me a card.

Having a mother and an OH at the same time seldom makes for an easy life.

I hardly bother with cards; presents for a select few. People know where the delete option is on their mobile if they are so upset that they cannot bear to speak to me; and no, I don't expect cards or presents from anyone. Saves them hassle, saves me hassle. I will buy someone a gift if I see something and want to buy it for the person, however.

What if it's from a pack of 20 that look nice and cost just £2.99 from Tesco?

Me too. These things needn't cost money if people are hard up - a handmade card from whatever's to hand will do just as well.

My ex has the same problem - used to think that my mother didn't like her (which was untrue, well, on the whole it was!), and now still gets a card, even though we are no longer together! Go figure!

Cards are a total waste of money IMHO, but perhaps I'm biased because my mother-in-law has what amounts to a small branch of Clinton's in her wardrobe. She really does take it to a whole new level - how many people have, for instance, received a "hope your wisdom tooth removal goes ok" card? FFS.
