Right, first thing, number one, if you happen to live near a forestry plantation and go help yourself to a load of wood, you might find that it is really wet. And even if you fill your boot and back seat of the car with timber cut by a borrowed chainsaw, after a few days of drying said wood on top of a woodburning stove, pine is really st, go for ash... in fact go for the ash that all the local holiday makers that came over in the summer cut and stored in their 'barns'. Yup grab that instead, ash is a wheyheyhey better wood to burn.

Secondaly... shop at Lidl or Aldi

Thirdly, brush up on your skills... Learn how to sharpen a chainsaw blade, I spent about 4 hours today learning all about chainsaw maintentaince skills.

Number 4. Don't be tempted to go to the pub.... well actually, assuming you have free money for petrol, the pub is a great place to hang out and listen to the st that everyone else is going through. In fact you can get away with drinking blackcurrent cordial there so lng as the barmaid will give you a break and make it look like Guinnes.

Finally... find a skill, something useful, something that people will pay for...

I was talking to a mate in the village the other night and he was telling me that most of his 'friends' are out on the 'rob' now because there is nothing else for them to do.

We chatterd for a long while and came to the conclusion that we/he/us weren't going to do anything like that until we couldn't eat from what we had (dole money). Yes, it really is that bad here.

Ahhh.... you see I'm onto a sl;ight winer here in that for me it is only my 2 year old son and me. We can live on 'st fvck all' food, warmth and love is all he need. Meanwhile my Ex is convinced she needs Sky Television, X-hundred Euros of heating fuel every week, Internet and big phone bills.

Have bought 26 cans of condensed soup, Bachelors’, because I used to work for them. 24 cans of tinned chicken/supreme/casserole etc. 10 large cans of tuna. 10 kilos of dried pasta.
5 kilos of basmati rice
5 kilos of cous cous

Enough ingredients to make dozens of loaves of bread

You may all laugh, but if there ever is a scare on food supplies, you watch how quickly the food shelves empty. Do you remember the bread or sugar shortage?

I guess I’ve spent less than a couple of hundred and have got a good emergency back up. Unless my London based G/F wants to move in and halve my supplies. Umm.........She would easily provide 40 kilos of fresh meat.

You see, the world is a little bit different over hear in Ireland. People are broke, people are robbing... hell I've lost my job, I spent an afternoon dragging logs off the hill side (robbing) so at least I can keep my house warm.

Think about this, I don't burn any of the oil in the tank for heating the house unless it's a day that my little boy comes to stay. (In fact, when he does come to stay I try to make sure we spend as much time as possible in someone elses house)

I'm not looking for any sympathy here, I'm just pointing out the way it is.

I'm lucky to have a bit of heating oil in my tank, there's plenty of people in the area that have had all there's stolen.

Along side all of this there is a huge black market economy running, and it's all skill or commodity based. You know, 50 acres of woodland... sell it... fuel cheaper than the coal man. Can you service and fix up tractors, well there's a farmer that needs that doing.

This whole depression/recession is cutting into many levels, unfortunately I've just dropped into the bottom level. No money, no savings, can fix tractors, and I've got a couple of good mates that own shotguns. Oh.... and I've got a tent.

I must admit I did get my camping stove and lantern out of the garage and checked they were still serviceable (coleman petrol powered), just so I know I can cook/see if power ever went out. Need to buy a 20l petrol can and fill it though - that should keep them running for a couple of months.
