2 friends who work in the city, both on circa £50k, share a good sized 2 bed flat in not the nicest of buildings in Islington. They walk to work most days, and I would say they enjoy a fairly flamboyant lifestyle.
My brother earnt £40k, worked by St James' Park, and rented his own place in Clapham, and took the tube in. He says if he could change it, he'd share a place with a friend for a while, as rent ate a third of his take-home pay.
Eating/drinking is as expensive as you want to make it, really..

Let's say £600 rent with bills, and you haven't got yourself up to your eyeballs in debt.
An £18k salary will be about £1170 a month. If you're living sensibly (not spunking money on fags, weeknight drinking, £3 starbucks coffee, etc) then that's perfectly doable as long as you're not expecting fancy holidays, running a car or anything like that. If you can walk/cycle to work then that saves a chunk of money (zone 1-2 travelcard is £100/month - if you can get away with just buses then half that).
London has plenty to do for free, or near free. It's just not getting distracted by all the big money stuff.
edit: or being deluded into thinking you're missing out by not having the "lifestyle" that you think everyone else has. Budget, keep tabs on what goes in and out, don't spend what you don't have and you'll be fine.

- £100 on travel
- £200 on booze / nights out
that's £1200 a month, which I think is the take home from a £20k salary
I've been pretty stingy on the nights out as £50 is easily spent
I haven't included for money for meals out, clothes, gadgets, holidays, or a car. If you want all these as well I think we're talking 25 - 30k
Saw my old college bill today and the food bill from hall was £15 a week. Those were the days!
