My folks retired to Devon and it takes hours to get there. Tomorrow is my mother's 80th birthday. Not only has she discouraged my brother, his wife, my wife, me and all the kids from going because of the weather but also my dad is due out of hospital tomorrow following surgery for bladder cancer.

No, we knew about dad. What no one knew was that she had hung on to her plan for a family dinner for her birthday with the old fella coming out of hospital on the same day.
