Shortages of stuffed Golliwogs !

...following on from the Carol Thatcher / golly thread,
..have just found out that mail orders for Golliwogs have gone through the roof - my sister runs a mail order business and is ( now ) virtually out of stock of stuffed Golliwog dolls - she is going to try and send one to CT as goodwill gesture via the BBC
I suggested she should also send one to the BBC controller (Janet somebody) who sacked CT - the controller called golliwogs grotoesque dolls.... they are actually rather cute.

However, using a similar logic - would giving a white coloured stuffed toy / doll to a white person be potentially offensive - presumably so. If I gave (say) a cabbage patch doll to a caucasian I guess they could also consider it racist as they could infer that the doll imparted negative connations or negative characteristics of caucasians (?).
So does that mean it's generically offensive for people to have dolls of the same or different ethnicity to themselves ? Presumably if the doll in question doesnt have any offensive overt or covert negative characteristics or connotations then a person could have a doll of *any* ethnicity (?)

Are white dolls racist, i suspect not ? Anything can racist if you want it to be.

I laughed at the woman on radio 2 who basically got pwned
White middle class woman rang up, complaining about golliwogs, and how unacceptable they are blah blah blah...Then a black girl came on and what she said, summed it all up for me
"I wish, middle class white people would stop sticking up for the black community, we can do it ourselves, as for golliwogs, they arent offence, niether was thatchers comment, infact my daughter has a golliwog"
I think the PC brigade who constantly complain about trivial s
t like this, which isnt racist in anyway shape or form, should go and talk to grizzly bears/pandas/black bears/polar bears and see what there views are on, us making teddy bears out of them....we can only hope mauling ensues

I dont remember to many Robertsons Jam employees moaning about the gollywog - I had one as a kid, and being a kid, the whole racist connotation bollarx went straight over my head.

do you mean selling stuffed golliwog dolls is racist ? - I am not sure how it is.it would perhaps be if the dolls displayed negative characteristics or images of people of african origin - but I don't see how they do .
similarly a doll of *any* colour isn't *by definition* racist unless it is negative ( surely ).
e.g : an arabic-looking doll wouldnt in itself be racist - however an arabic doll wearing a suicide vest would be offensive/racist as it would put arabs in a negative light.

"Police seized three golliwogs from a shop window display after a passer-by complained that they were racist.
Officers told Donald Reynolds, the owner of Pettifers hardware and gift store in Bromyard, Herefordshire, they were acting on the complaint.

To be honest... I didn't really have a particular opinion to impart so I added a slightly tongue in cheek Friday PH style comment that didn't have any meaning other than to make a pointless statement.
