If we do indeed suffer from GW one of the effects is that there will be more ERRATIC WEATHER - not that it will always be hot. Given that we are freezing of snow in Feb when it normally snows in Dec/Jan I would say this is a fairly good sign OF Global Warming .

So you can see why it is pissing me off when people keep saying 'snow eh, so much for global warming' - thinking GW means hotter days or something!

Obviously GW is occuring so we'll not need to debate that! biggrin

Has anyone heard the same thing?

But it's actually winter time at the moment...isn't that when it's usually cold and sometimes snows?

Not from my memory - but even if it had, my point about GW and people thinking it shouldn't be cold still stands.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh?

You come up with a hypothesis based upon a perceived set of circumstances. You are then corrected on your perception, yet continue to ascertain your hypothesis is correct nevertheless.

You believe in global warming
Its cold
Therefore you are right.

Sounds like a great argument. Ever thought of becoming a master debater?

Fact is, the theory of global warming never says we will be enjoying warm summers all year around, so people who refer to the snow and say 'so much for global warming' obviously don't understand the theory properly - thats my only point - and it still stands.

it's winter, sometimes it gets cold enough to snow. This also happened 100 years ago, 1000 years ago and 3000 years ago smile

Stop looking for attention, you horrible little person.

There is a 200+ page thread for this kind of nonsense.

Snow in winter, how erratic!

There is always a good dump of snow around the end of Jan or start of Feb most years in the highlands. Scottish ski resorts usually manage to stay open way later into spring than most people expect because of Feb and March dumps. It's just happened to hit the UK a little further south this year.

Back in the seventies I remember several inches of snow in mid april, that was pretty erratic. In any case snow is generally January rather than December and it's only the 6th of February. One climate change fan on the BBC the other night was explaining that although the weather was very cold, it wasn't quite as cold as the last time it was very cold (?!) so that was evidence of global warming.

It can't be evidence because it's cold and also because it isn't.

What is irritating is that every drought flood blizzard and heatwave is regarded as proof of warming. What kind of weather would disprove it? The weather always seems erratic, in the sixties my grandmother was convinced the strange weather we were having was due to the US space program.

I never said I believed in GW, nor did I say that the current snow is any proof that its happening

But that a theory of GW is erratic weather and I don't think you could doubt this much snow is a tad erratic for the UK

so therefore in a way its 'proof' of GW rather than a way of discounting it

my only 'issue' is with peopel who sarcastically say so much for GW when really the extra snow doesn't really do anything to discount it (if you were to believe the theory).

In as much as a few days of one particular type of weather in one region says nothing about global climate, fine, but a hypothesis that says it will get either hotter or colder as a result of anything, cannot be tested as there is no result that refutes the hypothesis. Presumably that's one reason why certain people (not aiming at the OP here) come out with such gibberish. It's their double-headed coin.

It's certainly not a scientific theory.

Sometimes you know - weather does what it does...There doesn't always have to be an answer as to why.

NOTHING is erratic about snow in Feb.

By your logic any weather at all is proof for GW? Lots of snow in Feb does nothing to discount GW just the same as no snow? So a hot summer doesn't discount GW but neither does a cold wet one?

The only way to discount GW is to have totally stable weather pattern? I doubt anyone can find data to substatiate that, ever.

Cold winters in the UK that make 2009 a non-event, many of the previous were before industry could have affected the weather:

1684 - Thames was frozen solid and continued to freeze over regularly until the early 19th century (That's regularly over a period of 200 years)
1814 - An elephant was led by foot across the Thames
1812 - Charles Dickens, who was born in 1812, experienced six white London Christmases in the first nine years of his life
1836 - Britain's most deadly avalanche was recorded in the unlikely town of Lewes, East Sussex.
1947 - The snowiest British winter of the 20th century , when snow fell somewhere in the UK every day from 22 January to 17 March.
1963 - Coldest winter on record
1975 - In June 1975, a cricket match between Derbyshire and Lancashire at Buxton was interrupted by an inch of snow which fell on the pitch.

...During previous ice ages, snow and ice covered Britain everywhere north of the Midlands. The west coast of Scotland is more precipitous and more jagged than the east because it snowed more heavily there and more glaciers formed.
