I've just received a very nice letter from the lovely people at E.on, informing me that they have recently reviewed my monthly DD payments and have had to amend them.
So, according to their calculations, my DD will go from a very reasonable £13 a month to a rather less reasonable £97 a month. According to my calculations, that's an increase of around 15 billion percent, or something.
I've got better things to do today than speak to "Alan" in down-town Bombay, so I'll be giving them a stern talking-to on Monday.
In the meantime, I'll be checking the fuse-box for new cables marked "Wembley Stadium" or "Blackpool Illuminations".

Quarterly billing in arrears is the only way forward.

Had the opposite with SWALEC. Last year we were £400 in credit for gas and £200 in credit for electric. They gave us a cheque for the electric but kept the gas credit. Didn't do anything about it as we new gas prices were going sky-wards. This year the gas credit reached £700 (£65 DD) so rang them up expecting all sorts of hassle to get it back. To my total surprise (as I had already warmed myself up on the guy who keeps putting junk mail through my letter box) the nice pleasant man with a Welsh accent said no worries do you want the full amount back or keep some over? He also reduced my DD to £60/month.

We've been having lots of nice chats with a certain popular French energy supplier over their insistance of reviewing our direct debit payments every month, which unsuprisingly results in a massive hike. Despite the fact we're in credit on both gas and electricity.
Their reasoning 'Oh, we want you have a fixed direct debit throughout the year, so you build up plenty of credit and are never in debit.'
Needless to say we phone them up and tell them to
right off.

I`m all electric too but paying about half of what you are!
Add to that I have piddly little radiators plonked at random around the place, I had a flat a few years back with underfloor heating and that was much cheaper to heat.

After checking a few facts, it would appear we have been on estimated readings since july last year. A rebate various fees and we are actally £177 in credit... cheeky feckers...funnily enough the DD has gone down!
Now should the responsibility to take meter readings be on me the user of service or on the service provider to provide accurate chuffing bills? This is the problem with all utilities...no frigging responsibilities apart to themselves.

I see where you're going wrong. What you should be doing is what has been done for years.
Quarterly billing. Being charged only for what you've used. No estimates.
This is what I do, and as a result I never get surprised. Its my money, and they can have it when they can demonstrate how much of their product I've purchased, not before.

Same thing happened with my 'leccy. I had one of those crappy card meters, where you buy multiples of £5 cards and feed the meter. Got sick of this, so got them to change it for a normal meter and went DD.However, they calculated that my card meter had not been regularly updated with regards to pricing (my fault? I think not) and therefore when I got the "proper" meter, they started me off on a £80 deficit and adjusted the DD accordingly. Which was nice.
My monthly DD with my leccy company is £39. Every quarter they send me a bill with an estimated usage which is way below the actual reading. Every qtr I send them the actual reading hoping they'll increase my monthly DD. It just stays the same. I'm thinking now I'll wait until the prices come down in the summer and switch to a new supplier. Hopefully I will then get all that expensive winter electric at bargain summer prices - but I'm not holding my breath.
My Grandpa once had a query about his gas bill with E-on, and couldn't get through to them, and when he did he didn't like the fact that first he spoke to a computer, and secondly, he spoke to an Indian that he couln't understand.
This lead to him thinking that E-on didn't really care.
So, he wrote to the chief exec saying that seeing as his company clearly didn't care what its customers thought after the initial sale, maybe they should change their name from E-on to F-off.

It's not the fact it's digital, it's the fact the world is dominated by giant corporations who prefer to hide behind websites and automated 'systems' than face their customers, and whose only motivation is profit.The reason many don't do quarterly billing is that the difference between the cheapest DD tarrif and quarterly billing tarrif can be quite large.
Even on my modest useage (£22 Elec / £22 Gas) the difference between the cheapest DD and QB is £150 a year. For people that use 3x what I do thats £450 a year being thrown away.

All of my DDs have been reviewed upwards, we were slightly in debit, but logic dictates that spring/summer usage will be lower so we will simply build up a massive credit.
Anyway - I got so fed up with calling them that in the end we decided to go onto old fashioned quarterly billing so we know where we are and arent funding EDFs summer holidays.
