I had the dreadful misfortune of having to walk through a shopping centre today.. a very large one at that. I don't frequent these types of places and I must say I was rather shocked at what I saw.

Everywhere, hordes of people staring into shop windows, gloating over 'stuff' (crap stuff they they don't need in any way shape or form whatsoever). Middle aged women salivating into Jewellery shops, grown men getting hard-ons walking past an O2 shop with some ludicrously oversized PDA style mobile phones in the window, a whole family masturbating over some 80" plasma.

Seriously, it was like a cross between 'zombies dawn of the dead' and 'abigails party'. What is wrong with these people ? Is this the way people are now ? Is this the way we go about trying to fill the big emotional and spiritual vacuum ? Buying a three thousand gigabyte ipod and then docking it onto a moulinex stainless steel triple door fridge with integral soda stream and ice maker ? I bet these people are there EVERY saturday staring at the same old tut. Its like the "Feelies" out of brave new world.

The problem is, how should we police them ? How should we educate them and force them to seek new and viable methods by which they might enrich their lives rather than impoverish them even further ? Maybe their spending/shopping should be curtailed in some way or maybe they should all be packed off to some huge correction facility and not allowed to return (like america). Anyone with me here ?

I`m glad we live in a society when people like yourself with the opinions and rantings that you represent are not able to influence any political decisions.

And the UK economy could really do with people not aspiring to own new stuff, and potentially taking out manageable debt to buy it.

It's exactly the same on a recent trip to Solihull (which appears to be actively cutlivating a "mall" culture)...

..except nobody is actually buying stuff, just salivating over what the could buy. Hordes of people as you say, but you can count the number of people with more than one carrier bag on one hand. And of those with bags, most are superdrug/boots etc.

Basically shopping is peoples hobby. That's what they do on Saturdays.

I'm sure many people would say exactly the same about you owning four cars...... you don't NEED them, the same way they don't need that telly. A bit hypocritical of you really.

But don't you find buying your wifes rich fat ass back in a bar of soap at £100 a time so fulfilling?

Argos.

This shop makes me more ranty than all the others because it sells nothing that anyone actually needs or could not do without or get somewhere else.

If I accidentally walk past the Argos in our fair town I can be sure to see a queue of fat pasty faced mongs lined up with slip of paper in hand gradually making forward progress to the till where a 15 year old lazy disinterested erk will process their slip of paper/debit card and tell them to "wait in zone3". The goods will magically appear on a shelf behind a counter and after another erk checks the receipt then the dream is realised and the shopping is received. Said pasty faced mongs then go back to their holes to plug in what ever they have just spent the benefits on.

I no longer go near town. nor shops generally.

Wife is dispatched for supplies once a week.

Jackal - I envisage you're the sort who salivates over a thesaurus and dictionary on a regular basis? Am I right?

As for Getragdogleg I suggest accidentally walk past a little faster next time and not loiter long enough to be able to recall the whole purchasing experience...

No st !

but hey, for other reasons

not because I happen to understand that something that looks totally normal and acceptable is actually abnormal and unhealthy

if 100 people put their head in the oven, do you do likewise ? IS THAT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING TO ME HERE ?
