Berghaus jackets....worth the money?

I've been looking at getting one.....in particular the 4 in 1 version with reversible liner and fleece.....

seems a lot of money for a jacket......would I being paying for the name or do they live up to the cost?

There are probably better for the money as you undoubtedly pay a little for the name - but in general they are excellent and you won't go far wrong.

I meant a bit of both. You do pay a serious premium for the name, but they are also top notch.

Musto 'suffers' similarly.

Understood. I'd draw the line at a Typhoon. They're quite pricey.

I have had a couple of Berghaus jackets. Bit pricey, but very durable and work brilliantly.

I seem to remember looking at the label and seeing that they were made in Middlesborough (or similair) rather than Austria etc. as the name might suggest.

My current goretex shell is Berghaus ... it's been pretty good, but the front pockets don't stay dry which is pretty silly. But that's just one of their jackets, and you really can't generalise. I'd pick up a hillwalking magazine and check out their reviews. There are quite a few companies making this type of stuff and I wouldn't say Berghaus is any better or worse than the rest. Worth looking at Mountain Equipment, Lowe Alpine, some of Sprayway's stuff is good, sure there are plenty of others too.

I have had my my Berghaus goretex jacket as a shell for a few years now and with thin thermals below I cannot fault it.

I've got several jackets and fleeces from makes such as helly hansen berghaus, gelert, lowe alpine and the north face. All to me seem pretty good quality and keep me warm wherever I wear them, be it out off roading in the 4x4, walking in the hills, on the motorbike or whatever.

Aside from their individual features there's no discernible difference in quality between the different makes, certainly not enough to make me pay a premium over any of the others.

Berghaus is good, really good I find. Depends on what you need it for, if it's sailing for example then Henri Lloyd et al are better

If you're going to take the piss, then at least spell the place correctly.

Although having said that, I once knew a lad when we were at college who got a Middlesbrough FC crest tattooed on his arm in Greece when he was on holiday.

He thought it was the mutts nuts until we pointed out that in fact it wasn't spelled Middlesborough.

Never laughed so much in all my life.

If you want a wind/water proof jacket and fleece - I'd recommend buying them separately : probably cheaper and more flexible than a combined jacket.

Also : any jacket made from Goretex or Triplepoint ( waterproof and breathable coatings ) is likely to have a max life of around 5 years : so I would never buy a "top of the range" cag.

I have about 30 yrs outdoor experience - so have been through a *lot* of gear and clothing over the years - I tend to buy the lower-spec but lightweight jackets from reputable manufacturers : the triple point or goretex on a midrange jacket is as long lasting (and waterproof ) as the coatings on a top spec jacket ( with more pockets , zips , and extra "features" ). I replace mine about every 5 years when they start to delaminate.

Cags from Lowe Alpine, Berghaus, North Face , Karrimor or any of the major brands will be good quality ( I tend to buy Lowe Alpine as there is a factory shop near where I live )

Certainly worth the money, all that I have of Berghaus have proved to be of great quality and offer great insulation from the cold compared to other manafacturers.

It's just for day to day use really......walking......general use.....going out etc....no sailing involved!!
