Emigration to America - opinions from the PH Brain Trust

I've been thinking for a while about emigration either to America or NZ/OZ.
Now with my job lost and the complete state that this country is in my plans could be accelerated.
It seems that as an Engineer my job prospects could be a little better in the US than here.
Problem is I have no knowledge of how it would work and were to get started, yes I have "googled" it but found hundreds of sites offering loads of different services and help.
So I ask the PH Brain Trust, has anyone done this before? Does anyone know any good websites/agencies to start with to find out my options and get things moving?
Just a bit of background to give an idea of what I am doing, I am mid-twenties, degree qualified and experienced design engineer, looking to move on my own (no family in tow) and start afreash for a job (that I would like to source before I got there).
I know it is a big ask to get a job before I go so really just looking for somewhere to start.

the relevent governments will have a website with all the details you need - dont expect it to be a quick process though.

I'd pick NZ over Oz too.

US will be difficult without some sort of work related sponsorship. I can fully recommend it though. As much as I think Oz is OK and NZ is great, Canada would be my choice. Much closer to the UK (if that matters, and it might matter more than you think - being a 9 hr/$1000 flight away from the UK gives some comfort), easier than the US to get into, has a lot of the plus points of the USA with less of the minuses, and to cap it all, it is a beautiful country. And you can own a gun. Yee-ha...

Unless you marry a US citizen, that's the only way you have a chance of getting in.Unfortunately, the US has no current shortage of laid-off design engineers.
Now is probably not the time.

Just to clear-up I'm not some crazy gun nut, but would like to try my hand at hunting and range shooting with a rifle.
And yes I will be something with a V8 - although my S4 already has one so thats less of an issue.

"gtrclive" here at pistonheads is an engineer and he came over last year with his part built Ultima. Because of the import laws your TVR will be staying there. We are not allowed to import anything newer than 15 years old here for more than 12 months. If you want Clives e-mail just e-mail me at.

Anyway it's and Audi S4 so would sell it before leaving anyway.

In january 120k jobs were lost across canada - to put that into perspective the same pecentage would amount to quarter of a million in the UK - so there maybe a few folks competing for jobs currently!
Ive also thought about doing it. I have the huge advantage of having a uk and american passport 
so its really easy for me. Only problem is erm, not really got anything qualification wise past a levels.
