Being of the half hour and needing a good book, paper or laptop persuasion how do you boys/gals in the Army deal with it in the field.

I'd have to say that I think that I am brave enough but no comfort breaks would mean that the Armed Forces would have to do without me.

I would think the same way as you would in a toilet but without the walls around you.

Gets your mates to stand in a circle with their backs to you, whilst you sit/squat in the middle and try not to groan too much.

I would have thought that Tommy Taliban lobbing mortar rounds at you on a fairly frequent basis has 2 effects.

1. You must be fairly close to stting yourself all the time.
2. Your mind would be focussed enough not to spend too much time worrying about the lack of a good book.

ETA Certainly if I was being shot at, there would be an enourmous pile of st to hide behind, but I'm a coward.

You certainly won't need half an hour to go if you've spent the past couple of days on MRE's. About three seconds should be sufficient. Make sure you've dug a hole deep enough to avoid splashback or adopt the 'regiment' method if you don't want sniffer dogs following you - plastic bag opened on the ground below you, squat and reach under both sides and hold your arse open so you don't need to wipe. When operation is complete, tie the bag up and bury it three feet deep.

It's all glamour in the forces you know. . . . . .

In my day compo rations used to contain some probably-not-that-good-for-you ingredient that meant you only 'went' once every three or four days. And when you did the 'produce' was a huge smooth toothpaste-out-of-a tube snake-like thing.

Thats still the case. There used to be a story that back in the cold war days, the day the army in Germany went from fresh rations to compo was a closely guarded secret. The reason being that the third day was always going to be a bit special and we didn't want the Russian Third Shock Army arriving when we were all squatting over smelly holes all over the north German plain.

ahh the grand slam, a young lad disrepected the "cock" (cocinelle from the keo brewery) which is the worst red wine i've ever had the mispleasure to hurl down. Anyway said youth, didn't head the warnings of it's powers and after being escorted to bed, grand slammed himself.

The added twist was he had his "grand slam bedding" stuffed into the top of his bergen whilst he slept in the showers. He only found out about his additional package after we arrived back in sunny Scotland a day later.
