OK, im completely stuck for what to do here. and its really starting to get to me.

Im with abbey national bank. and i have an O2 contract phone, my bills were coming out around the 21st of every month, but as i didnt have money in my account due to not being paid by work untill the last day of the month this direct debit bounced.

Now ive looked at my bank statement and its saying that ive been charged 35 quid for an 'instant overdraft request fee' but O2 dont take money from you if it makes you overdrawn, so then they credited the money back, abbey have charged me ANOTHER 35 quid for O2 REFUNDING my money, and then becaquse this happened the month before (i didnt notice) they withdrew the charges from my account on the 20th (when i had no money) and this has cost me another 25 for 'instant/unauthorised overdraft fee'

Now due to this on the 20th of Feb 95 quid is due to be taken from my account. My hours have recently been cut in work, but i do earn enough to cover my car and my phone so its not a problem, but as ive paid for those i now have no money, meaning that this 95 will be taken out even though i have no money meening i will get charged another 35 for a request fee and another 25 for acually having the money taken out. pluss that 95 pounds meaning i will lose 155 from my next paycheck !!!!!

surely they cant do this as 1, my bill was repaid by o2 meaning i was no longer overdrawn and 2, surely they cant charge me for having money PAID INTO my account!!!

I really dont know where i stand with this.

any help would be greatly appreciated as im going to go see the bank tomorrow and need to know where i stand so i can get this sorted as quickly as possible,

thanks

Thom

say to them you will close the account if they dont refund you the charges for O2 taking the money then refunding it, as no money has come out of the account [well it has but they CANNOT charge for it going it thats just libertys]

Go and speak to the bank manager. Don't go absolutely st-on-the-floor mental, but try to look like you might. They're taking the piss!

And yes, definitely say you will close the account if they don't refund it. And follow up if needs be.

If you keep your account in good order then it should not be a problem. Have a good excuse for why its happened and say its a bit unfair and you really can't afford it. They will charge some interest that i'd say you won't get back but if your account has been a mess and you have been taking the piss they won't be so forth coming.

My account went into the red for the first time in 25 years. I had transferred money online from an outside account but it didn't go through. Explained this and they sorted it but they had nailed me for everything. Like you it was a lot, but they did the right thing and I think I lost £2 or something in interest over it all.

Wasn't Abbey though. Try not to get too wound up and speak to a human at a branch face to face.

I can't offer any help but I can say that what they have done is fking outrageous. I will never bank with abbey national after reading that.

funnily enough i did try to bank with the abbey. I wanted to open a joint account with the mrs so we both went into town with a bank statement, driving licence and passport all listed to currend addy etc and correct. we sat down and went throught the relevant detail but hit 2 snags. the first is that its all very open plan and we were sat next to the incoming customer line which made me a little edgy about discussing information within earshot of all and sundry. im not paranoid - its just its my business not thiers. not the end of the world though. the main problem was that the docs presented were apparently 'not enough' to open an account. I did point out that i had a good sized cheque to go in to start the ball rolling, that i didnt want any kind of credit and that, while my knowledge of the banking system was limited, i thought a bank would welcome a customer in these times wanting to give it money to keep on a fairly long term basis.
Alas no. i was told to go to my current bank and get a ream of past statements to prove i was worthy.
fine i did.
i went next door and opened a account with them intead. in my minds eye i still have a mental image of her waiting for me to return smile

Ring the bank and tell them, they can probably do more to help than an internet forum. It's likely that if you speak to them they will refund the money.

been into bank today to the reply of 'sorry we dont deal with charges incured in branch, you have to phone cust. serv.'

so i phoned cust. serv. and had an indian bloke. apparently they cant remove the charges as one for £25 for going overdrawn and not having an overdraft (which is fair enough i will pay that as its my stupidity that got me overdrawn) one charge of 35 is due to an overdraft request due to the phone bill (O2's fault was i was not told my bill payment date change would not bee effective immediately) and the final 35 is due to an unpaid direct debit fee (again O2's fault for the above reason) so looks like im going to be on the phone to O2 to see if i can claim back from them

This is getting byond a joke.
