50mins from London. No changes needed, including Zone1 underground. ***OFFPEAK***.... £35quid each. So thats 70quid for the pair of us.
How much would it be for four of you? £140?http://www.firstgreatwestern.co.uk/Content.aspx?id...

We've been looking into return train fares from Fareham to Brighton on a saturday. For 5 adults and 2 kids (1 early teens and 1 toddler with a buggy, therefore 2 cars worth of travellers).
The actual price is something like £86 for advanced bookings, and thats not first class either. Even using some 2 for 1 tokens from The Sun, it's still cheaper to drive 2 cars over and park in a poxy NCP, than it is to go by train.
We wont buy a railcard as we'll never use it again, but surely this is the sort of journey where the train is ideal...they should be encouraging people to use them, not pricing them off the train and into their cars.

:P
I can't believe I'm going to type this, heyho...
It costs me < £25 to get a train from my local (walking distance) station to another station right outside work (it's closer than the nearest car park) for seven days travelling at any time. Distance is about 30 miles each way.
Parking alone would cost £12 per day. for £35 I can go 1st class and get free coffee\tea\fruit juice\ peanuts etc and the other passengers are less likely to smell of wee and I always get a seat.
but tbh if the parking was cheaper I would still prefer to drive.

I just checked this with a calculator and he's absolutely right, that is £70 for the pair of them. 35 times 2.FWIW I agree, it's obscenely expensive.
I live a couple of miles from both Berkhamstead and Chesham. Berkhamstead to London on London Midland about £13 return Chesham to London on Metropolitan tube £8. London Midland are robbing barstards.
