You are given 12 identical billiard balls, however one is faulty and is either lighter or heavier than the rest. To identify which one and which fault it has you have a set of scales and three chances to use them.

• Put 6 on one Scale and 6 on the other (One side will be lighter/ heavier)
• Put 3 on one Scale and 3 on other (One side will be lighter/ heavier)
• Put one Ball on one Scale and one ball on the other (hold final Ball)
• If the Scales are even it's in you hand, else one Scale will be lighter/ heavier

Lighter or heavier than what? You don't know wether the faulty ball is lighter or heavier.

Problem I have with this is that it doesn't say whether the different ball is heavier or lighter, so on the first attempt, would you select the lighter or heavier balls to go to 3/3?

Should be 'identical-looking' or 'visually identical' then.
