Best way to do America?

OK, so i've got two weeks to kill this summer, and Mrs and I fancy America. Problem is, the last time I went there on holiday I was 14.
Virgin holidays offer a nice 14 day fly - drive taking in California and Vegas, cars offered are crap, but accomodation looks lovely.
BUT, should we fly out under our own steam, get a hire car on our own and book hotels as we go? What about hiring an RV? But I assume that's a pain in town.
So PH, book pre- planned fly- drive, or book our own flights and hire car and have an adventure? Don't forget, i've only got 2 weeks

Step 1 - make a list of all the places in the US that you'd like to visit.
Step 2 - check a map to see how far apart they all are and revise list.
That'll give you some pointers as to where to fly to/from. Then check car hire companies online as they'll charge you extra for going to different states and extra for not returning the car to where you hired it from. Hotels/motels are everywhere and are rarely fully occupied, but make sure you book the first night in advance as US immigration will require an address.

Don't take the fly-drive or any other car included package.
We have just booked a fortnight in Florida, it included a free car - which was approx £400 to insure!! I got a fully insured car with premium upgrade for £265!!
Another tip, i looked for the best deal on the net then went to my local Thomas Cook travel shop who happily matched it then gave us good rates on insurance etc.

Try Hotwire.com. They are probably the most competitive travel site in the US. When booking hotels they do not give you the actual hotel until after you've booked. They do give you the general location and star rating. This is to prevent you going direct. I found the hotels and car hire with them first rate and cheap. Good luckGreat stuff.
