Removing a blood-hardened dressing

I have a dressing to remove following an op on my hand. The wound bled for 24hrs or so afterwards and as a result the dressing has set to a carbon-fibre-like hardness and is obviously superglued to the wound.

Now clearly I could just man up, grow a pair, and simply pull it off, but I suspect that might not do the op site or the stitches much good. And it'll feckin hurt.

Long soak in warm water first?

Moisten it and remove gently works for me.

You could just man up as above and rip bits of your wound off with it

I had that used on me last year when I lost the back half of a finger in an electric plane ,I had a gauze dressing over the wound that the flesh grew back through.

How I would remove it myself: Warm water, long soak, gentle rubbing, tugging and pulling until it comes off with only mild discomfort but over a long period.

How Nurses remove huge bandages in the hospital with no time to feck about: YANK.

I was a hairy bugger too. Yowch!

Get a little spray bottle and clean it out well. Then use that with a moist cotton bud to gently soak a little section free at a time. You don't really wanna be pulling stitches out and having to go back.

Make sure you dress it again with clean stuff once you're done and it's aired for a while.

Wounds shouldn't really bleed for 24hours - unless it's gaping obviously. Has you doc checked your for anaemia?

Anaemia? No. He did warn that it would bleed a lot, and it stopped after the first day/night (apart from the time I clobbered it and it leaked a bit more for a short time).

Ta all - obviously am looking forward to this immensely now!

Just realised what that sounds like.

Cut away what bandages you can with some sissors and have a bath. You know how a scab will go all soft etc in the bath the same will happen here but takes longer.

TBH my bandages have taken a few attempts to take off after being drenched in blood. Sometimes it's better to leave them to come off on their own but I quite like a bit of pain so habitually tug at them for some fked up reason. I also like pressing my bruises so they hurt.
