Okay.. This is another of those kind of posts.
Now this is going to sound silly, but after reading about the Air Raid Shelters in Guildford this morning, I was thinking.
If a Nuke was on the way, could you all jump on an A380, and fly off into the sky until its settled?
Or is this not feasable at all?

Considering that they're usually detonated a kilometer above ground to reduce fallout, that the remaining fallout would be dangerous for several months, that the radiation and fireball would extend spherically outwards regardless of altitude, then assuming you were the same distance away from the blast in the plane as you were on the ground then No.
However the disadvantage of being on the ground is that you can't run away at 500mph, so with the likelihood of being much further away than the big boom, then yes, you would be more likely to survive... assuming there wasn't an EMP which takes out the plane's electronics

With the warning you had being counted in minutes, then filling a A380 full of people and taking off is not exactly realistic. Any high airburst warheads would start messing with any aircraft nearby.

I seem to remember Russia detonating the biggest nuke ever exploded, which happened to be dropped from a plane, which didn't crash. So in theory, assuming you could take off in time and be heading away from the blast site, you'd be alright.
From what I've read you'd be pretty safe from immediate radioactive harm as long as you were a few miles from the site, too. Longer term damage from radiated particles flying through the air might be the issue, then (as it was with Cumbrian sheep when Chernobyl went bang).

How long would it take to load up a 500 seater A380? I bet the two minute warning wouldn't give them enough time to even open the doors.

But theoretically, we're on the runway.. Pilot has just put full thrust, and we've just been given the warning.. Would we be okay?
I'm just making sure that if anything does ever happen, Brown wont have a chance to get away and that he'll be coming down with us you see

They are detonated at altitude to produce maximum damage. Anything not in the immediate range of the heat (i.e. not vaporized), but in the range of the shock front (wind traveling at or slightly above the speed of sound) gets it twice.The shock front radiates out from the blast in a sphere, as you would expect. On the ground there is one front, at altitude, there is a second one as the first shock front reflects off the ground and creates a second front, moving slightly slower.
Altitude also prevents large objects (buildings, hills, etc.) from blocking the primary blast as well.
