Cavity Wall Insulation with a very very small cavity....

We had a guy round to check if we could have cavity wall insualtion - and apparently we can't as our cavity is very very small.


However someone mentioned a special sort of cavity insulation especially made for small cavities - anyone know anything about it or have any further info??

Why bother?

The effectiveness of any insulation is pretty much directly proportionate to its thickness, so if you've got a very small cavity, you'll get a very small reduction in the amount of heat lost.

The money would be better spent making sure your external pointing is up to scratch.

This will be the stuff. originally developed by nasa, however for it to work best, you still need a 50mm clear airspace (25mm each side). Have no-idea how you could retro fit it, without demolishing your wall.

I had exactly the same a couple of years ago - was surprised really, I thought they'd just bung it in. They too mentioned a forthcoming solution.

I looked into cavity wall insulation a bit and found very polarised opinions about filling cavities - a lot of builders seem to reckon that if the house was built with empty cavities then they should be left empty. And it's often poorly installed, leaving lots voids in the insulation.
