Afternoon All,

I found an old bike in my garage that I want to start using again, unfortunately it has a 4 ring combination cable lock on it and I cannot remember the code for the life of me. It serves me right for nit buying a more expensive one which you can set the codes on.

So, do any Pistonheads know of a way to "crack" it without me sitting in the cold trying every combination.

Big pair of bolt cutters or........


0001, 0002, 0003, 0004, 0005, 0006, 0007 & repeat for another 10 hours!

Put some pull on it. Then turn one of the rings. With any luck you will feel it move slightly when you get the right number. Then repeat on the next ring. If no luck with the first ring you try, try another one. If you are careful it will probably work

Fairly easy to do.. using a stanley knife, insert the blade into the tight gap where the 2 parts of the lock join together. Apply enough pressure so that you can feel the resistance when you turn the first wheel (the wheel nearest the opening). As you get it lined up with the correct number you should be able to feel the resistance to turn it becomes less. Then rinse and repeat for wheels 2,3 and 4.

This works well for suitcase and baggage locks but is entirely dependant on the quality of machining. If the tolerances are spot on, the gap between all the cylinders will be equal meaning you won't know which tumbler is free, but if its either worn or not brilliant, you should have it open in about ten minutes biggrin

Hmmm.... By 'my garage' do you mean the lampost on the corner of your street with the abandoned bike you've been eyeing up for the past month?

That's my advice. Only 10,000 combinations.

It doent have zeros......



It doesnt actually take long to try all the combinations. Probably no more than an hour at most. If you start at 1111 its unlikly that you'll ahve to go all the way to 9999 anyway

That used to work for the old locks when I was at school.
But why are we giving Pikey help to pick a lock?

Assume there's a 50% chance that the number is neither 1111 nor 9999 etc.

So that's just 3,280 combinations to try in 3,600 seconds.

I'd just love to watch you run through those combinations at one per second!!!!!

Surely there are 9999 possible combinations?

FWIW I found a combo lock in the gym last week and ran through all the numbers til i hit it (yeah, i was bored) it was 4369.
