Bit of a strange one but wondered how I stand.

I had a company leased vehicle in my possesion between Feb and Dec 2007 with a previous company I worked for. Had no problems with said vehicle and handed it back with zero damage and no problems. Went to work for another company and still do so.

Completely random phone call on Friday 13th Feb 2009 went along the lines of.

Mr *** this is leasing company *, you had vehicle **07*** on March 7th 2007. Answer is yes from me. We have a debt company chasing us with regards damage caused to a Council road sign in Durham to the tune of £660 and want to know if this was you?

They gave me details of the road junction and the fact that my name had been given by the company I worked for as the driver.

I have heard nothing today but wonder where I stand.

I have never in my life been to the location they have given, I have never in my life been in the vicinity of Durham. The day of the incident was a Bank Holiday monday so I was at home ( I know that because I refuse to travel on Bank Holidays). Do I have to prove that I was not there or should I be asking for what evidence they have.

Any advice gratefully recieved.

I certainly dont want any black marks against my name, nor to face a bill for something I have not done.

Ask for their address. Write to them Recorded Delivery and tell them what you've told us.

PM me if they give you more grief.

That sounds like a stitch up. Deny all knowledge if you are sure it was not you and ask them to prove it.

Last time I checked the law stated that you are innocent until proven otherwise although that may have changed since last week.

Good luck either way, that's not a nice reminder of your old company.

look at your bank statements to try jog your memory as to where you were as proof

i suppose they need to prove it - it could be a cloned car.

how could you do damage to a lamppost and not the car?

ask them to prove it although i'm no legal expert
What a star, I'll never make a detective. Just checked and my Statement shows a cash withdrawl in Stoke, Marks and Spencer on said date...

Nowhere near Durham.
