removing the lower part of a chimney ! ?

right, i have an internal chimney running all the way up through my house and out the top of the roof.
it is no longer used.

on the ground floor i would like to taper the chimney off back into the wall at 45 degrees.

is this possible ? according to my architect tonight it is ?

As long as its bonded into the wall then yes it can be done...by a competent builder.

You can't taper it down at 45deg, but you can remove it completely. You can't have a chimney above without it being supported below.

The best way would be to put a beam to support the chimney breast hidden within the depth of the first floor. If you were removing the chimney all the way up to the loft then you could use 'gallows' brackets to take the weight of the chimney back to the wall.

I had this done on a previous property. A quote nicked from the Internet and a pic. "you need to use a pre-stressed lintel and then support it with gallows brackets (of a height at least 1.5 times projection)...."
