You can't taper it down at 45deg, but you can remove it completely. You can't have a chimney above without it being supported below.
The best way would be to put a beam to support the chimney breast hidden within the depth of the first floor. If you were removing the chimney all the way up to the loft then you could use 'gallows' brackets to take the weight of the chimney back to the wall.
