I'm about to get a quote for replacement soffits, guttering and bargeboard. Is there anything I should ask when the guy comes round to give me a quote with regard to materials, what they will do/replace, etc? The house is a 4 bed detached and has a couple of holes in the soffits in 2 corners so I think the underlying wood is definitely rotting and needs a full replacement, as opposed to the stuff they bolt on top of what's already there.

Cheers, James.

I had this done last year. Local quotes were between £4500 and £7500.

I opted for buying the fascia, gutter, downpipes and brackets from the local UPVC supplier (who also supplies to the companies that quoted). Just under £1000 for the whole house. As mine is a chalet house I have two roof lines. House is 40ft by 40 ft with front and back dormers.

I have a local chap who completed the work over 14 days at £85 pd. We also had a lad to assist at £20 per day.

Including all the extras it came to just under £3k, and that included running tv and telephone wires under the tiles to tidy the house up.

My advice is get a quote from the big boys, them get a local supplier and fitter.

(Angel plastics deliver to your neck of the woods, and a respected trade suppliers. I got mine from a chap in my town but he did match their price).
