Paint - Brand names vs own makes?

I've got quite a bit of painting ahead of me (new wood) and I've been looking round for some primer, undercoat and top coat. Now starting with primer/undercoat a certain (black & orange) DIY supplier sells their own brand for around £9 per tin. The brand name (think big shaggy dog) product is more than twice the price at £22 for the same quantity. In the past I've found that it's worth paying the extra for the top coat; however, for undercoat/primer is it worth paying the extra for the brand name? Is it much better than the own make product?

Always been happy with the B&Q Value primer/undercoat but I do go up a grade for the gloss. Still own label but I do find the value version a bit thin.

Never got on with the one coat stuff - Just not satisfied with the finish branded or not.

IMHO the big find in B&Q is the blue handled brushes. 5 for a couple of quid. Streets ahead of any other budget products. Used to be worth buying a good set of Harris or similar bit I have found that the branded quality has gone down and the budget ones have improved.

From personal experience over years , I would now only go with branded paint. Especially on external jobs.
Quality sand paper lasts much longer and gives a better finish.

Off topic but for the little bit extra they cost, go for Harris "No loss" brushes....

Never lost a single brush hair in the paint in ten years..........

I always stick with brand names - tried some B&Q emulsion a few years ago - it was like pea-water, neede three coats and still wasn't perfect - drips all over the place.

In the end, it cost more to go "own make".

A few years ago we tried GAP paint. That's the fashion stuff which had two parts - a base and a top coat. It was metallic paint and when it went on it looked remarkable. One year later it went flat, the metal particles didn't shine and it looked like a normal paint. It was ridiculously expensive, didn't cover well and clearly didn't last.

Wickes sell their own brand, flip flop or something silly, it's half the price, covers twice as much and it's not made by a brand that is synonymous with gayers

I've always used cheapish undercoat and a quality top coat.
The one paint i will never touch is crown silk emulsion.

Branded or not, the stuff you get from DIY shops is not a patch on proper trade products, especially when it comes to gloss. I go to builders merchants and get Dulux trade gloss.It goes on smoother with less coats and gives a much higher gloss. And do not skimp on the quality of brush either- makes a big difference!

Quite a few "own brands" are made by the same people who do the more well respected brand names as the company contracts it out for them to make it (I used to work in DIY stores). Just don't buy Wickes paint its st. I should know, the amounts of returned pain I got every day was enough to drown half of Scotland in

I always use a certain trade shop that sounds like it might be associated with BREWing beer. Good quality and not expensive.

Yep go with (non budget) trade paint. You might not recognise the brand name, but if you are any good at all at painting, it will give you a better finish and wear better.

A large professional decorating company that I know always use Glidden paints made by ICI.
