There are some nice places to live outside of Barnsley, and just commute!

I was brought up in Barnsley, until I left for Uni in 1999. I generally liked the place until leaving, night life was good etc. However, seems to have gone down hill a lot in the last few years. The town centre seems to consist solely of charity shops, and only a few decent pubs havent been ruined by rampaging Chavs.

Some nice areas around Barnsley though, Cawthorne is really nice, though very quiet. Personally, if I worked in Barnsley id live in Sheffield.....

You get the same idiots in Barnsley that you find in Sheffield, Leeds, Birmingham and especially London. The shops aren't great but there are some good ones if you know where to go. Some of the bars are excellent and I've had a few good nights over there.

Depends what you want out of it really.

I admit there are still some decent bars (Lucorum, Blah Bar etc), but apart from bars there is nothing. There are about 4 restaurants in the town centre and three of those are Curry houses.

Dont get me wrong, im from Barnsley, so dont want to sl4g it off. However, I cant bring myself to recommend that someone should live there.....

My Dad is from Barnsley. He left at the first available opportunity. We go back from time to time to see the relations and my god, it is as grim as they say.

But, even if you have to work there, you're not limited to living there. Grenoside always springs to mind as one of the better suburbs of Sheffield.
