Finally a good idea with the Environmental label attached?
Discussion
I have not seen this mentioned yet so p
s off repost police.
It appears that common sense has prevailed albeit under the guise of the environment. Mobile phone companies are agreeing to standardise their chargers for mobile phones. I think it is going to be the micro USB which is used on raspberries at the moment.

It was all fine in a few years back when most people had a Nokia and everybody had 5 nokia chargers in their house

I'm thick, I know that, but how can a charger use 50% less energy to charge a battery of given capacity?
Isn't it a bit like saying we'll fill this 1L bucket up using half the water we used to?
electrickery really really goes over my head
ETA I take it it's more akin to saying we'll fill the bucket more efficiently?

Including Apple?
If apple can't even manage to get a phone to send mms i dont think the industry should pressure them into something this difficult.I think they should be left alone to make Fisher Price activity centers for adults

But I use my Apple Iphone charger to charge loads of different Gadgets
As it uses a Female USB socket on both the car and mains charger, I can charge my Tom tom, Camera, video camera, other MP3 player AND my iPhone,
Meaning you only need to take one charger on holiday with you....
so you could say they are already ahead of the game?
Yup very much happening. My HTC and new Sony Ericsson both work on the same mini-USB style chargers. Should hopefully lead to some more standardisation on accessories too.
My girlfriends N95 has the port but not for charging which we only found out with an empty battery in the morning

Mini or Micro?
My 8500 Classic Nokia is a tiny USB and it's a PITA and a new charger is £15, if you can find one... the slightly bigger one is much better though.
Not sure why this was so hard to do really. USB really did revolutionise PC peripherals, so glad that an off-shoot will hopefully flatten the playing field for charging/connectivity for most portable electronics

Daughter used to get very cross when I nicked her Razr charger for my TomTom, MP3 player and lord knows what else with mini USB charging, so she removed it from my grasp. Had already bought a spare for her so used that until my son went off with it for his Blackberry....
