Trust me until it happens you really cannot believe it, even with the booze my Dads deterioration was unbelievable and in the last 12-18 months not drinking he was transformed.
When you go and visit your relative, who has been sectioned for only 14 weeks, you realise that they don't know who you are it is very saddening. My mum has been through hell, while she was still living with him (his condition made his violent) and now that he is there but no there living in a home.
He is living in one of 3 units in the UK that can cater for about 25 men with his condition, and if he wasn't violent then he would have to pay circa £3k a month for similar care.
There will have to be some fundamental changes in this country to the way that we deal with those with Dementia and those related to those with the disease. It makes my piss boil that those who have paid taxes for the last 40 years are then bleed dry by the state.
I pity John Suchet and admire him for telling his story.

Serious, put the remote down and walk away from the TV - stop watching 24 hour news. Its enough to drive you to suicide if you watch too much of it. My OH is a psychi nurse working in an early onset dementia unit. The patience needed to care for dementia/Alzheimer patients is both physically and mentally tiring for trained staff so relatives who have become main carers have my upmost respect. I have been into he ward on a few occasions but the longest I have stayed is 30 minutes. I find it too distressing. Could never do her job. Take a good look at the friends you have now and think about how many,percentage wise, will get this disorder. Scary!!

Just watchedd Away Frome Me last night. Freebie DVD in the Sunday Times. Rather touching.
Had a GF in universty whose grandmother lived with them and went really badly. Smearing the walls with excrement etc. Horrible!
My mother is in the early stages. Sister took the car keys from her just a few months ago.
