.. here's a novel solution using water jets, last hours, is no more dangerous than a jet ski, and tows its ingenious power source behind the user flying in front of it, and costs somewhat less.!

A friend of mine has built and operated a working one and it certainly hasn't cost him "millions"

Yes that's him. I think the BBC are doing documentary about the jet pack also. He's got some cracking videos of tests including one where he couldn't shut it off and because he was tethered it turned him into a human catherine wheel for a few seconds.

Although it all looks beautifully engineered, I think it's a bit nuts really.

Seems like the original jet-packs have come down in price to $200k, can fly 10+ minutes, or 10 miles. But the max pilot weight is 180lbs, so that's me out then !

I think I'd much prefer to be above water - less chance of being concertina'ed if it all goes 'orribly wrong.

Would love to see James May do a more detailed prog on the home grown solution made in your mates shed

Tows a small 'boat' holding the engine and pump, that feed the water up the yellow pipe to the nozzles.

Blimey! That's a blast from the past! I think the BBC took the cartoon off because IIRC (and I was only about 3 at the time) didn't he take a pill that then enabled him to breather underwater? And lots of kids raiding the medicene cupboard and then jumping in the pond would be bad...
