Empty House - locating the owner??

I've found a massive empty house which looks like it could become party HQ for KingDickers this summer. The only trouble being that the house is indeed empty.
First stage is clearly to ask the neighbours, but I've talked to a couple of them and they just reckon it's been empty for years.
It's quite a modern gaff, not creepy at all and it doesn't look like the result of a death. Garden is all overgrown and suchlike but the house looks in rather good nick.
What would be the normal procedure with regards to contacting the owners if I wanted to buy it or rent it?

Land registry your best bet.
You might find if its on a big prime potential residential site that it has been "land banked" i.e. current owner bought it with intention of demolition and building new units but has no intention of starting just yet.
Plenty of big houses bought in my area a year ago, planning permission granted for redevelopment but credit crunch stopped play and the sites just turned to vegetation!
