Britian's most successful writer for years and one of our most intelligent. Some of his work shows accute social commentary bordering on genius...certainly a damn sight more perceptive than those who try and write professional tomes on the subject.

Colour of Magic and the Light Fantastic.
It'll all make more sense if you start with those two...they were the first.

Mort is a good standalone one and gives you insight into his warped mind.

Personally I wouldn't start with these two - I found them hard going and they almost put me off him completely. I would say that Mort or one of the witches ones would be a good place to start

The discworld novels are good. quirky humour, but as someone else pointed out they are full of funny insights into social interaction.

Only problem is I can never keep track of which ones i have read and the sequence.

Also IIRC Some require prior knowledge of characters, but some start a new thread.

I'd start with Guards! Guards! or Small Gods. They're way better than Colour of Magic

But Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic set the tones and are an insight into his way of writing. Yes other books are better, but start with the first two, then pick and choose.

I like all the Guard related stories and the Witches. Also take the time to read the footnotes, they are masterpieces in themselves!

TP is a master tale spinner, and has some great quotes, like this one from the opening of The Colour of Magic:
"He was the sort of person who stood on mountaintops during thunderstorms in wet copper armour shouting "All the Gods are bds." "

“Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.”

Can't stand his books, not my type of writing at all, but I now have the utmost respect for the man after watching his TV programs.

Very very moving and a crying shame to see someone so creative struggle with things that he can remember were so easy. Can only hope that his high profile (and $1m) really helps to further and speed work towards an understanding and cure.
