Alternative career options for a Firefighter please?

It looks like the current conditions of service are deteriorating so much, I will have to look at an alternative career, either full time or part time!
I know these are hard times, I was thinking of doing some form of training until the economy improves, the training and or career really should be flexible, as my shifts mean that doing a course on a regular day is difficult.
I would kindly appreciate suggestions/options for careers, training and selecting alternative careers?

Hose Experience - Gardener
Axe experience - Lumberjack
Ladder experience - Window cleaner
Every fireman I know has a part time business, either a skilled trade: plumbing, electrical etc. Some are driving instructors, car sales or part time mechanics.
One of the better ones is roofing, business is always steady due to UK weather and once you get in with a few insurance companies preferred lists the work is never ending.
Its one of the reasons the public feel apathy towards firefighters: it may be a dangerous job (until HSE got involved) but its full time pay for part time hours.
I'd like to add that many of the firemen I know retired early or left the brigade due to the whole pensions fiasco and trainee wages farce.

Fraid it is still dangerous FF deaths are rising, and it is full time hours, 42 hour week, when other people are at home in the evening with their families, shift workers aren't.I'd like to add that many of the firemen I know retired early or left the brigade due to the whole pensions fiasco and trainee wages farce.
With regard to the pensions FF's pay a significant amount of their salaries towards it, cannot comment on retirments in the past (but Fire services paid for new stations with FFs contributions at the start), it is not like that now, not sure what the trainee wages farce is?
Really I am after careers alternatives, don't want to get embroiled in politics!
