Ceiling ideas for new showroom...Please help!

I've decided to go against all advice, and extend my current store to take on the first floor area above. Sell a wide range of Audio Visual kit and basically want to convert the first floor to represent an open plan appartment, with a bathroom, kitchen , lounge etc etc. Each area will have audio and visual kit installed, incuding bathroom and mirror tellies, to show clients what can be achieved in this field. Trouble is the cost of putting a new plasterboard ceiling in is way above my budget . The total area of the ceiling will be 100 sq metres. Quotes so far for plasterboard seem to be around £5000.00!!!! Only cost me £20000 to build a 2 storey garage with a flat above!
Have looked at the stretch ceiling solutions, which although superb and easy to install cost around £65.00 a sq metre. My other thought is to spray the blockwork in the roof black, and run all electrical cabling and speaker wire in galvanised trays [also black] and then hang industrial type lighting on flex. The walls are all going to be painted bright white with all electrical stuff hidden in steel conduit. The overall effect , I hope, will be similar to the type of industrial warehouse conversions.

not sure if its going to be keeping if your looking for a modern ceiling, but I created pitched ceiling in a showroom in Oxford which was very cost effective and created a warm olde worlde style (as walnut colouring was used) normal rafters going to a ridge off wall plates to the sides with ivory fibreboard in between the rafters, quite easy to DIY but you do need height, at least 10ft ceiling I'd think.
Probably a terrible idea for a modern sound gallery, but this was for a door showroom so worked well, guess you could do a modern take on it

Depending on access (scaffolding) Ceilings circa £16m2 std layin grid ceiling(officey), or MF ~(plasterboard) about £25m2 with a tape and joint finish and emulsion.
Remeber access above ceilings could be importrant to you if you wiring in the voids so the LIG ceiling could be an advantage.

I'd try getting a few other quotes on the board and skim option. Quote sounds pricey.
To tack the boards should be about £170 (fiver each)
Boards £165 (fiver each)
To tape and skim would be 2 spreads and a labourer for the day £300
Multifinish £20 (fiver a bag - 2 coats)

I've assumed you have ceiling joists. If not a suitable false ceiling would need to be constructed but a chippy could fire something up out of 3" x 2" quickly and cheaply.

Thats the one! Off to the chandlers in the morning! Shame we're not on the coast as finding one in Shrewsbury could be a bit daunting. Great idea...I've still got those lateral thinking grooves going on.

Think fire regs need to be considered when looking at fabrics, they will be rated for spread of flame (not fire rated) and a commercial enviroment this should be a consideration.
Thanks for that. Contacted local council re building regs and they were pretty laid back about it as it was the top floor of a two storey building. Above the ceiling its just blocks so fire cant travel upwards ...Might be the fact that they own the building and they are desperate to let it out!steve.c said:

Support grid and trims approx £4m2
Labour £7.50m2
Emulsion £4m2
So cost of £21.55 excluding any waste or profits
