If anyone noticed, yesterday the Dow Jones closed lower than the Nov. 20 low.

Big canyon with unseen bottom out there...

However, it seemed the best time to start moving from cash is when people are most gloomiest...

No, in the long term we'll be fine. At the current rate by 2010 most companies should be trimmed down enough to break even or make a profit.

Then we repeat the same mistakes over the proceeding 10 to 20 years rolleyes.

Ah! That'll explain the uncollected cadavers littering the streets, the looting and my untimely and agonising death from starvation brought about by my endebtedness to the bank during my journey home last night.

This is not having a dig at any individual but as a general comment, you would think we had never been through a recession before the way the country is carrying on, talk about short term memories. This is the third recession I have witnessed and it seems no one died because of the previous two, so I guess we have to draw the conclusion that we will get through this one.

the cycle goes boom - bust

The bigger the boom, the bigger the bust...

I have no formal financial training but even I understand this...

we will come out of it - Iceland as a country has gone bankrupt yet it hasn't sunk into the sea, or suddenly stopped existing...

Its going to be long and hard, and it'll be a long time before life is as good as it was... but it'll get there..

No perhaps not, but in the previous recession there was no help for anyone either, personal or commercial, interest rates were allowed to sky rocket over night, 1.5Million unemployed, quickly became over 3Million unemployed to the point where the press stopped reporting on the latest figures, so if anything the previous recession was worse than this one. Then just when things couldn't get worse some silly sod announced the idea of poll tax.

Sorry chaps it is all doom and gloom and will get seriously worse. Big problem is we have/will have very little to sell now the financial and services industry has been revealed as the 2009 South Sea Bubble Co.

I will be out this weekend for a blast in the car to try to put GB and his bunch of miserable cohorts and cronnies out of my mind together with the absolute devastation they've visited on this once great country.

we will get through it though - but when gordon is describing it as a 'hurricane' now and saying it could be like 'japan' when he is normally quite careful about what he says is a little worrrying. i think the fig is something like house prices in japan are half what they were 17 years ago.
Since when did what that clown said matter?

Good heads on here! smile

Just interesting that recessions and depressions has occurred many times before and often, whenever people ask are we doomed or talk about bottomless pits, that's the best time to invest wink

Does your analysis cover the Dow in 1930 when it had recovered 60%?

i'm no expert and not advocating anything at all...

but that graph doesn't show what happened the next 15 years smile

edit:
Ah I should have checked, the next 20 years after that was a bad period as well.

From Triumph of the Optimists
1930-1939 - return on equities was only 1.9% per annum
1930-1949 - only 2.9% per annum
shocking!
Chin up guys... will be tough going from here
