Loft conversions

Hi all,
I am thinking of getting a loft conversion done at some point in the future. Nothing too fancy, but it will obviously need the full insulation job, along with wood floor and roof, electric points and light, radiator, plus a single window. Loft size is probably what one would class as small - the house is a standard ex council 1940 semi.
Just wondering what prices i might expect to pay should i leave it all to a professional? Or has anyomne ever done one (or part of one) themselves? I am no DIY king, bit i imagine the insulation bit would be pretty straightforward, or should i steer clear? What are the perils/pitfalls of the DIY route?

Neighbour did it to theirs as the chap is a retired carpenter, but they didnt put a window in and because of the eaves coming in the stairs were fairly steep (they didnt want to lose the small 3rd bedroom). It couldnt really be classed as a conversion if it was to go up for sale. They just wanted to open up a bit more space and use it as a computer room so werent too bothered.
I dont know what price would be reasonable for that. £2k? I'd see stairway width, position and entrance to the conversion as the most important parts, everything else should be fairly straightforward

There are lots of parameters you have to consider.
What type of rafters have you got? (at your age of property it will not be trust rafters this is good)
What size of ceiling joists have you and at what pitch.
Max head room.
Lighting Velux or dormer
Access where can the stairs go?
Do the stairs at ground floor come in to a hall or open plan?
