UK workforce being asked to accept a 5% pay reduction as uk employment law says they have to get consent.

Would you say yes?

Interesting Quote in the Guardian:

"While the basic pay of senior executives is being cut, they will more than make up any reduction in basic pay by increases in their executive bonuses brought about by reductions in every one else's basic pay."

I'd rather there were redundancies and the remaining staff kept at their current pay levels.

There have been redundancies within EDS, lots of them! My wife took voluntary in the new year and fortunately its come up roses for us as she has found a much better paid job. We were discussing this today (I work at a company full of ex-EDS employees) and its certainly an 'interesting' situation.

There are always redundancies at EDS, every 3 months like clockwork for years...

Get rid of the slackers first, then look at cutting salaries

That's nice of you....pack you bags, you're sacked.
I'd be willing to take my chances. Better that than the whole workforce being exploited.

How much would you be willing so see your salary eroded by before you say enough?

I'd lay off everyone else first, although that would be quite scary because I'd actually have to WORK banghead for a living again!!!!!!

In all seriousness myself and co-directors will take huge dividend reductions before laying anyone off, a) to keep the company structure intact for the recovery(if it ever arrives), and b) because making good, motivated staff redundant is an horrific experience.

I work for HP in the UK and we havn't had this yet. Luckily its only US

I'd take it but there would obviously be very badly motivated staff when you start taking money from them.

People will just start doing the bare minimum, putting in sod all effort and doing less hours.

Its a stty company to work for as it is.

I know of a few companies who have done this, personaly i'd rather take a 5% pay cut than not have a job at all

Yeah most people just take it as a temp option while they find another job. Then eventually enough people leave cuz they cant handle the paycut and dont like being made an ahole of.

I could have the cut and have fingers crossed it doesn't come. Or worse - redundancies frown

Was asked to take 10% pay cut start of December last year.
I refused and was adivised few weeks later to take it or basically fk off.
At the end of the day it's better to still have work than be looking for work at present.
Still a major kick in the wallet but i'll survive, just about.
(Strangely i'm overdrawn this month by almost exactly what i've lost in income).

I genuinely like the people I work with. So if someone said to me "will you take a 5% pay cut or we have to make Dave redundant" for instance, I'd take the 5% cut. Assuming Dave didn't want to be made redundant, of course. And assuming Dave has a family to support and isn't a playboy with a large trust fund or mansion he could sell!
