So, you go into a shop and ask for "half an ounce of Amber Leaf" and the pre-pubescent till operative looks at you like you've just stepped off the last spaceship from Mars.

"12.5 grammes" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Feel free to call me "Grandad".

quite right. I know my height in feet/inches, my weight in stones( too many), my cars fuel consumption in mpg --not bloody litres, and distance in yards on the golf course. In New York at moment and they use pounds, miles etc but have been decimalised for decades.

I had to explain to the pleb behind the counter at the builders merchants the other day that if I wanted french measurements I would ask him in french. fking useless fking metric fking bks measurements. Don't even get me started on metric nuts and bolts. Its weaker that's why I don't want to hold the fking gearbox on with it. And no I don't give a flying fk what the major manufacturers use, yes I do think that they are s. Just like you for suggesting such a half-arsed foreign idea. Twunts.

I work on a Tobacco counter and find it really confusing when people ask for grammes rather than ounces, despite being taught metric measures at school

I'm bi-lingual. I speak metric AND Imperial. However, metric to the building industry is metres and millimetres, NOT centimetres.

3/10 for the rant, though.

Then you are the one shining light in a sea of dullards and, for what it's worth, I salute you.

"I would like 2 six foot lengths of 4x2 please."

"I can do you some cut down especially, is that 2 metres?"

" If I wanted....."

I don't do anything with weights (either metric or imperial), but for distances, I use whatever the nearest round value is (unless accuracy is required, in which case it's millimetres).

Any shopkeeper worth his salt, although forced to use the metric measures, will know what their equivalent is in imperial and thus allow you to ask for half a pound of shag tobacco, or, as is more likely in my case, half a pound of midget gems.

I work in imperial and metric (mainly metric for design but imperial for materials). They both have their benefits. Fortunately I'm not a retard and can understand and convert both ways..

Imperial measurements are a fking stupid system. Just because you've used a stupid system for a long time doesn't make it any better.
