Best Comedy / Worst Comedy - your choices
Discussion
Pick one of each - or more if you want, and explain why....
I'll kick off:
Best - Ferris Bueller's Day Off. Groundbreaking filmic techniques, incredibly sharp script, perfectly judged performances and stunningly memorable scenes (eg Twist and Shout).
Worst - Tropic Thunder. Appalling scripts, incoherent acting, purile "gags" and dreadful self-indulgent direction.

Best: Hot Shots 1 & 2 - spoofing at its very best. Sharp, witty, non stop gags and Captain/President Benson was a stroke of genius. Like all great comedies, it still remains funny today.
President (points at globe) "We will attack the enemy base here"
Aide "sir that's Minnesota"
President "Well that's the clever part. We ship them over and can catch some fly fishing whilst we're at it. Dammit man do I have to think of everything?"
Worst: Epic Movie - how not to make a spoof. Watch a few trailers, add some knob gags and repeat. Will become completely irrelevant in a few years time - oh look, a joke about Sarah Jessica Parker being ugly. Where do they come up with this stuff?
For me an unfunny comedy is the very worst type of film. You can to a degree forgive an action film for badly done fight scenes or a horror film for obvious scares. But a comedy without jokes is, well, pointless

Best comedies i could go for days:
Monty Python and the Holy Grail- A story line you couldn't think of after 20 pints, great British cast and to top it off full of quotes that everyone remembers.
Step Brothers- Great acting from Ferrell and Reilly, they really seem to suit the immature acting. They're just not even trying. And memorable quotes.
Ghost Town- Not normally a fan of Ricky Gervais but he is brilliant in this. Simple witty comedy, have watched this 3 times already.
The worst comedies:
The later Police Academy's- They just went to far, didn't understand quiting when ahead.
You don't mess with the Zohan- Just did not see the point in the story. A few very funny parts but barely worth watching.
I will think of more later i'm sure.

best: mash - satire at its finest, airplane - spoofing at its finest, animal house - stupidity at its finest, blazing saddles - lampooning everything and everyone at its finest.
worst: ... haven't really got one... Hannibal was so bad it must qualify as worst comedy just because it's probably the worst film ever made. Except The Hitcher.

Right, time to throw the cat amongst the pigeons
Worst - Spaceballs. Now I love Star Wars but agree it's also fun to poke fun at, so I'm not seeing this through blinkered fanboy eyes. However this film is quite simply unfunny with a never ending stream of nonsensical jokes. Yes we know you're Jewish, you don't need to remind us every 2 minutes. A chestburster doing cabaret? Use the schwartz? It was about as funny as the opening of Saving Private Ryan.

Try Robin Hood: Men in Tights, or Life Stinks if you want to have a good reason to smash your DVD player up while screaming "Endless jokes about sneezing, Gesundheit! aren't funny even to a man with a brain bypass"Worst - Spaceballs. Best? Probably still Monty Python (agree with Holy Grail over LoB), although if it doesn't have to be a film then Bill Hicks stand-up is absolutely superb...and there's more TV comedies than film (Blackadder, Frazier, and NTNOCN all stand-out).
Worst? Anything with thingummy-Green, the t
t that somehow dated Drew Barrymore. Not funny. Not ever, not even close...

I thought it was just me who didn't find it funny!Best: Austin Powers, The Big Lebowski, Life of Brian
Worst: I can't think of any, I tend to forget bad films.
Best: Bladerunner. A classic for me.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost in time, like tears... in rain. Time to die. »
Worst: Toys, with Robin Williams. The only film i have ever walked out of a cinema watching! Utter rubbish.
