Impossible to say.

I'd evaluate it at the time based on her appearance, behaviour and purchases.
Same as I would for anyone, old or young.

I once paid for a woman's shopping when she had forgotten her purse.
She had searched thorugh all her pockets and her bag several times only to realise she must have left it at home or lost it.

The checkout girl said it wasn't a problem and she could cancel it all but I told the lady I'd pay and she could give me the money back. (£30-ish)
I left her my contact details and sure enough her daughter called at my house the next evening with £10 more than I had paid and a huge bunch of flowers.

I refused the extra money but took the flowers.

Had this happen with a young couple in front of us in a queue who had both come out with not as much cash as they thought they had recently. They we're a couple of quid short, and at the time a couple of quid wasn't going to hurt us. I just said don't mess about putting stuff back and gave them the cash. I'm sure by the thanks and the smiles that it really made their day and the girl on the till was actually quite shocked that anyone would do such a thing.

I don't think it matters whether its old lady or young lad. I felt good about it and I know it made them smile. I hope one day someone may see fit to do the same for me.
